New Amazon Aware line of beauty products are EWG VERIFIED®

Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly makes it easy to find more sustainable products

WASHINGTON – This week, Amazon announced its new line of Amazon Aware consumer products, including a number of beauty products that have earned the Environmental Working Group's highly sought EWG VERIFIED® mark.

The new Amazon Aware items are part of the Climate Pledge Friendly initiative the company launched in 2020, which makes it easy for consumers to shop for more sustainable products. Today Amazon has more than 75,000 products featured as more sustainable through the Climate Pledge Friendly initiative.

In addition to an assortment of EWG VERIFIED face cleaners, moisturizers and body creams, other Amazon Aware–branded items available for sale include men and women’s apparel and household essentials, and bed and bath products that carry other third party certification marks.

The EWG VERIFIED mark is one of the external certifications as part of Climate Pledge Friendly. Products that hold one or more of the certifications that are part of the program receive a Climate Pledge Friendly badge.

For almost 30 years, EWG has tracked chemical safety and warned consumers about companies that use hazardous chemicals in items such as cosmetics and other personal care products. Soon after launching the groundbreaking Skin Deep® cosmetics database, EWG created consumer databases for household cleaners and processed foods.

Products that earn the EWG VERIFIED designation are free from EWG’s list of chemicals of concern and meet the strict ingredient transparency guidelines EWG has established to protect your health.

“We’re delighted Amazon applied the rigorous criteria needed to have their own line of beauty products carry the EWG VERIFIED mark,” said Jocelyn Lyle, EWG’s senior vice president of partnerships and development.

“Amazon and EWG are both committed to a rigorous, science-based and transparent approach to verifying consumer products. The launch of Amazon Aware as part of the company’s Climate Pledge Friendly offers customers an even wider range of options for shopping more sustainable,” Lyle added.

Amazon reviews hundreds of external sustainability certifications and chooses organizations that recognize products with demonstrated environmentally related sustainability benefits. And with the addition of EWG VERIFIED, consumers will discover products that are also better for health.

Each organization that is part of Climate Pledge Friendly was vetted by sustainability experts within Amazon and third-party consultants to ensure third-party programs like EWG VERIFIED are reputable, transparent and scientifically defensible.

“The EWG VERIFIED mark is recognized as the gold standard for health and transparency,” said Carla Burns, EWG’s senior director of cosmetic science. “EWG has long verified cosmetics and other personal care products, and recently expanded into household cleaners, baby diapers and ingredients.”

“Because of this new EWG partnership with Amazon, more consumers will learn about the rigorous science-based criteria we’ve developed to review a product’s impact on human health and our fragile environment,” Burns said.

When consumers see a product with the Climate Pledge Friendly badge, they’ll also be able to learn more about the certification behind it. Items covered by Climate Pledge Friendly include grocery, household, fashion, beauty and personal electronics products, among others from a range of categories.

Shoppers can also visit EWG’s Skin Deep® database and use the Healthy Living app to learn more about the Amazon Aware products, or find other products that don’t include potentially harmful ingredients.
