Below and attached is EWG’s testimony to the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for their hearing pertaining to the Administration’s policy initiatives under the Clean Water Act.

EWG, along with Clean Water Action and more than a dozen co-signers, submitted comments to the California State Water Resources Control Board and the California Department of Social Services regarding the agencies’ implementation of AB 2370. The co-signing groups are asking the agencies to adopt and implement actions to ensure that children not ingest lead-contaminated water while at licensed child care centers in California.

Attached is a letter submitted by non-governmental organizations, to support House and Senate Armed Services Committee efforts to include several provisions related to per- and poly- fluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2020.

EWG objects to the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed drinking water standard for perchlorate, a contaminant associated with harm to the thyroid. The EPA’s proposed legal limit of 56 parts per billion for perchlorate in drinking water disregards the risks to children’s health, ignores the latest scientific research, and fails to follow the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act to use the best available peer-reviewed science for setting drinking water standards.

Environmental Working Group objects to the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed decision on glyphosate, the most heavily used pesticide in the U.S. The EPA’s decision to allow continued, extensive use of glyphosate disregards the cancer risks and children’s health risks posed by glyphosate and should be re-evaluated with emphasis on the latest research on glyphosate toxicity.

EWG has submitted detailed comments to the Food and Drug Administration about the agency can improve sunscreen safety and effectiveness. We also submitted comments jointly with Safer Chemicals Healthy Families, Public Citizen, Consumer Federation of America, Environmental Defense Fund and Healthy Babies Bright Futures. In addition to these two comment letters, we also provided the agency with a list of 31,621 petition signers supporting #SunscreensMadeSafer!

Environmental Working Group submits comments to the EPA on the registration review for pesticide thiabendazole. EWG urges the EPA to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the cancer risks of thiabendazole and to use a full 10x children’s health safety factor for this chemical.

EWG has submitted a petition to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requesting biomonitoring of the American public for glyphosate, a commonly used weed-killing chemical that has been associated with an elevated risk of cancer and harm to the developing fetus.

EWG has submitted comments to the Environmental Protection Agency urging the EPA to include a 10-fold Food Quality Protection Act children’s health safety factor for the triclosan human health assessment and to consider all routes of exposure from all potential sources for triclosan in the final assessment for this antimicrobial chemical.
