EWG’s Editor in Chief is a senior-level executive position with responsibility for ensuring that all of the organization’s written content meets the highest professional journalistic standards, while also advancing our mission of empowering Americans to lead healthier lives in a healthier environment.
On our website, ewg.org, which attracts more than 10 million views monthly, we publish staff-written articles, original research reports, news releases and official statements on a wide range of public health and environmental issues, including toxic chemicals, contaminants and pollutants in water, air, food and consumer products; agriculture and the nation’s food system; energy, transportation and the climate crisis; federal and state policy and legislation; corporate sustainability and responsibility; and environmental justice. The flow of content varies daily and weekly: It can be as heavy as a half-dozen short pieces a day, plus longer pieces and packages needing more time. The ability to turn pieces around on deadline is essential, occasionally requiring evening and weekend work.
The Editor in Chief must ensure that all content is clear, well-written and appropriate for one or more of our multiple audiences: consumers, journalists, policy makers and business leaders. They must also make sure that sources, attribution, quotations and other elements conform to professional journalistic practices. The position also affords the opportunity to write their own pieces or co-author staff pieces. Strong interpersonal communication skills, the ability to edit work by staff members with a range of writing capabilities, and an ability to work with a diverse staff and other professional and grassroots advocates are essential.
The Editor in Chief is a member of EWG’s Senior Management Team, which supports the President and Board of Directors in setting and achieving the organization’s goals. The position reports to the Senior Vice President for Communications and Strategic Campaigns. They may be needed to write or edit any other materials as directed by the President or the Senior VP for Comms. They supervise the Staff Writer and Editor, a position primarily responsible for seeing that content conforms to AP Style.
Candidates should have a significant number of years of experience in journalism or in environmental, public health or other public interest advocacy, with a strong preference for applicants who have worked in both fields. A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is a plus. A preferred candidate will be comfortable editing content dealing with scientific and governmental issues, and have an understanding of the U.S. environmental and public health movements.
