WASHINGTON – The House will vote on its version of the 2018 Farm Bill Friday. The bill would balloon the already bloated federal farm subsidy program to hand subsidy checks to individuals worth millions, even billions of dollars, and distant relations who don’t live or work on the farm.
Here is a statement from EWG’s Senior Vice President for Government Affairs Scott Faber:
Farm subsidies should go to farmers in times of need – not millionaires and billionaires, or farmers’ distant relations. But the House won’t even consider modest amendments that would have ensured farmers who get subsidies actually live and work on the farm, and that they have not already earned millions in the marketplace. Instead, the House will now have the chance to reject a boondoggle farm bill that re-opens subsidy loopholes for billionaires like Charles Schwab. Well, as they say in Texas, there’s more than one way to break a dog of sucking eggs.
