Laboratory animals. In animal studies DEHA causes infertility and liver, kidney, spleen, and testicular toxicity. Liver effects include cancer in mice (NTP 1982). Other effects are decreased cholesterol and triglycerides. Developmental exposure to DEHA causes decreased birth weight, poor bone formation, and urinary tract malformations. Other metabolites of DEHA, especially 2-ethylhexanoic acid, can also cause significant developmental toxicity. For example, the lowest dose of 2-ethylhexanoic acid tested in a developmental study caused decreased fertility, decreased sperm mobility, sperm abnormalities and skeletal malformations (including clubfoot, extra fingers or toes, and slightly paralyzed legs) (OEHHA 2002). MEHA, but not DEHA, causes peroxisome proliferation (Cornu, et al. 1992).
