SACRAMENTO – On Wednesday, March 29 at 9:30 a.m., the California Senate Environmental Quality Committee will consider the Cleaning Product Right to Know Act of 2017 (SB-258).
Sen. Ricardo Lara of Bell Gardens introduced the legislation to require manufacturers to disclose cleaning product ingredients and contaminants, including the chemicals used in fragrance mixtures, both on product labels and online. This goes far beyond voluntary efforts by companies, which still hide potentially hazardous chemicals with the term “fragrance.”
Consumers and professional cleaning workers have a right to know what’s in the products they buy and use. Some chemicals in cleaning products have been linked to cancer, infertility, birth defects, asthma, allergies and burns, but companies don’t have to disclose what’s in their products.
If the bill passes, it would be the first such law to take effect in the nation.
The legislation is co-sponsored by the Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, the Environmental Working Group and Women’s Voices for the Earth.
