Beyond Ag Policy: Farm Bureau Favors Confederate Statues, Opposes Gun-Free Zones and Gay Marriage

Monday, January 8, 2018

President Trump is the first sitting president to speak at the annual convention of the American Farm Bureau Federation in more than 25 years. And some of the group’s policy positions might help explain why Trump is joining agribusiness stakeholders today in Nashville, Tenn.

Below are just a few of the AFBA’s notable policy positions, in no particular order of outlandishness:

  • Opposes gun-free zones near schools and communities
  • Opposes same-sex marriage
  • Supports voter ID requirements
  • Opposes multilingual ballots
  • Supports confederate monuments
  • Supports mandatory drug testing for welfare programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP
  • Opposes calling tribes “sovereign nations"
  • Opposes funding for abortion
  • Supports making some prisoners work on highways and farms
  • Supports the death penalty for treason or espionage
  • Opposes statehood for D.C.
  • Opposes federal programs that promote ethnic diversity

Surrounded by lobbyists for corporate agribusiness, Trump will find kindred spirits on a wide-range of policy positions.
