EWG’s interactive map shows locations of reported U.S. algae blooms since 2010. (Not all algae blooms produce poisonous bacteria.) Since no government agency keeps records of algae outbreaks, locations were found through internet searches of news articles. Often multiple articles were written on a given outbreak, but only one article is linked for each incident. The map goes back to 2010 and is continually updated, so some locations of older blooms may drop off the map as stories are archived.
