EWG to Remove Certification Score Boost
Date posted: 2019-02-15After careful consideration, EWG has decided to adjust our scoring methods to remove the score boost we give products that have obtained Green Seal and Ecologo certification. These certifications remain robust indicators of healthier and more environmentally friendly products compared to conventional counterparts but we no longer view the score boost as necessary or warranted.
We implemented the original score boost for products with these certifications in 2012 because the majority of companies at the time were not publicly disclosing most or even any ingredients. With company commitments to complete ingredient disclosure on the rise, our need to rely on outside ingredient scrutiny has become unnecessary.
Of particular concern for EWG is that a number of the ingredients that may be used within Green Seal and Ecologo products are at odds with our opinion of their hazard profile, including those for quaternary ammonium compounds (quats), ester quats, and isothiazolinones.
We will continue to display these certifications under the green certified tab of product pages alongside a short list of others we feel can provide value to the public.
