EWG’s Environmental Health Research Intern will work in a fast-paced environment, assisting the Investigations part of EWG’s Research team to work on chemical contamination issues, especially related to drinking water. (Tab Water Database, PFAS contamination, TCE Pollution).   Past interns have also contributed to the consumer product databases for which EWG is recognized and which millions of American uses. Intern(s) will review data on contaminants and help with investigation team reports. 

The Research Intern will both learn how a project develops from an idea to completion and get first-hand experience of the research conducted in a not-for-profit organization.

Responsibilities: 
  • Conduct research (online, phone) as necessary to find information on contaminants, suspected health hazards, and related information regarding everyday consumer products;
  • Construct databases using Excel, EWG’s online data entry tools, or other methods;
  • Assist in other related environmental projects as needed.
Qualifications: 
  • Current students with an interest in public health, environmental science, toxicology, chemistry and engineering fields.
  • Prior experience with R, SAS, or other tools for manipulation, analysis and visualization of data as well as demonstrated knowledge of application of statistics concepts to the analysis of datasets.
  • Familiarity with MS Excel and/or other data analysis programs.
  • Ability to independently pursue and complete research tasks.
  • Ability to pace work to meet deadlines.

Length of Internship:  10 to 30 weeks, depending on the timing (fall or during the academic year)

Start/End Dates of Internships:  Flexible based on the intern’s school start/end dates. For fall/academic school year, preferred start date is after Labor Day and Preferred end date is end of late May/early June..

Internship Hour Commitments:  Interns should be able to commit to around sixteen (16) hours per week.

Days/Hours of internships:  The intern can work between 7 AM – 7 PM on Monday-Friday.  There are NO weekend hours available to work

Location:  Washington, DC or San Francisco, CA office.  Tele-Work/Remote working is NOT possible for the internship.
