Target’s Push for Full Ingredient Disclosure Echoes Consumer Demand

SAN FRANCISCOToday’s decision by Target to require full ingredient disclosure from its suppliers by 2020 is great news for consumers, said EWG President Ken Cook.

“Today’s announcement underscores the leadership Target has shown in moving away from toxic ingredients and toward more information for consumers,” said Cook. “As the number of Americans concerned about toxic chemicals in consumer products grows, they are demanding safer ingredients and more information on labels.”

Among the goals Target announced today is achieving transparency for all ingredients – including fragrance – in all personal care, baby and cleaning products by 2020.

The company will also move to have its suppliers reformulate products to be free of formaldehyde, phthalates, propyl-parabens and perfluorinated chemicals, and flame retardants by 2022.

“Target’s action is a big win for all of us who use personal care products and household cleaners, among other goods, and we urge companies to move even faster to disclose,” said Cook.

EWG research has been a driving factor in both ingredient disclosures and shifts away from a number of troubling chemicals once widely used in commercial goods. Over the years, millions of consumers have relied on EWG’s Skin Deep® database of personal care products, its annual Sunscreen Guide and its Guide to Healthy Cleaning.
