Aniline

Status: Unregulated - EPA has not established a maximum legal limit in tapwater for this contaminant.

Aniline is used to make a wide variety of products such as polyurethane foam, agricultural chemicals, synthetic dyes, antioxidants, herbicides, varnishes and explosives; it is also used as a stabilizer for the rubber industry. Potential health impacts associated with Aniline include cancer, cardiovascular or blood toxicity, developmental toxicity, gastrointestinal or liver toxicity, kidney toxicity, neurotoxicity, respiratory toxicity, and skin sensitivity.

An Environmental Working Group analysis of Aniline tests reported by 3,940 public water suppliers in 2 states shows that between 1998 and 2003, 47 thousand people in 17 communities drank water contaminated with Aniline. No health-based limit has been established by the federal government.Aniline remains unregulated in tap water, without a maximum legal limit.
