PFOS (Perfluorooctanesulfonate)
PFOS (Perfluorooctanesulfonate) was found in 10 of 10 umbilical cord blood samples from babies born in U.S. hospitals in 2004, at concentrations ranging from 1.6 to 5.8 ng/g (wet weight, in whole blood). It was also found in 3 of 3 adult blood samples, at concentrations ranging from 3.6 to 16.2 ng/g (wet weight, in whole blood).
Active ingredient in Scotchgard prior to 2000. Phase out forced by EPA because concentrations in human blood close to levels that harm lab animals.
