EWG analyst Dusty Horwitt testified July 26, 2007 before a subcomittee of the House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee that speculative demand for minerals around the world has sparked a land rush for mining claims in the West and that the nation's outdated mining law leaves treasured places such as the Grand Canyon at risk. Horwitt noted the huge increase in uranium claims and emphasized that federal land managers feel that they have little authority under current law to balance mining with other resources.
"This means that speculative Chinese demand for nuclear fuel has more influence over the fate of mining in the American West than the people who work and live there," Horwitt said.
