Sunscreen Bill Heads to President’s Desk

Washington, D.C. – EWG applauds Congress for passing a bill that will give Americans better protection from the sun’s harmful UV radiation and greater access to safe and effective sunscreens.

The Senate-passed Sunscreen Innovation Act cleared the House of Representatives by unanimous consent last night.

The bill creates a more efficient process for the government’s review and approval of the active ingredients in over-the-counter sunscreens. The Food and Drug Administration has long had a backlog of promising new ingredients awaiting approval.

Scott Faber, EWG’s senior vice president, said:

Many promising sunscreen ingredients have long been used in sunscreen products that are sold in other parts of the world, including the European Union and Canada. It is about time Americans have access to the same products that others use to protect themselves from the dangers of sun exposure. We must speed up the review process. Thanks to the leadership of Sens. Jack Reed and Johnny Isakson and Reps. Ed Whitfield and John Dingell, Americans may soon see more sunscreen options on the shelves of the local drug store. We urge President Obama to move quickly to sign this bill into law.
