New Draft Proposal To Update TSCA Falls Short

WASHINGTON -- A new draft proposal to update the Toxics Substance Control Act of 1976 falls far short of what’s necessary to ensure that chemicals are safe, EWG said in a statement today.

Ken Cook, EWG president and cofounder, said:

“The revised draft provides an ambiguous, untested “safety” standard, creates needless roadblocks to state action, fails to provide adequate resources, fails to fast-track asbestos for review, and, fails to provide tough deadlines, especially for implementing rules that protect us from the most dangerous chemicals. Under this proposal, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency could take a century or more to review the most dangerous chemicals. We urge Senators to support amendments that will ensure that chemicals are safe, that preserves a meaningful role for the states, and that will ensure that the most dangerous chemicals are quickly reviewed and dealt with by EPA."
