EWG Thanks President Obama for Vetoing the Destructive Keystone XL Pipeline

WASHINGTON – President Obama’s veto of the Keystone XL bill shows he stands for national policies that invest in clean renewable energy and that he understands the destructive impact this project would have on America’s environment and energy future.

Heather White, EWG’s Executive Director, said:

The President’s veto, only the third of his presidency, underscores the need to create a comprehensive energy plan that invests in alternative energy. This veto expresses the Obama administration’s rejection of a 1,179-mile pipeline that would carry 800,000 barrels of heavy petroleum a day from Canada to the Gulf Coast.

EWG thanks the president for his leadership in standing up to members of Congress who claim that the pipeline would not damage the environment. To the contrary, construction of the Keystone XL pipeline would release hazardous air pollutants and dangerous particulate matter and threaten American water supplies, as EWG documented in its 2013 report Poisons in the Pipeline.

The clean energy future is possible -- today. We urge the president to continue to set bold goals to develop a federal policy that removes market barriers to renewables and decreases America’s dependence on dirty fuels.
