Meet Your Conservation Heroes

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

Every day, thousands of farmers take steps to reduce polluted runoff and restore wetlands and grasslands.  In a new interactive map, EWG’s Libby Foley has highlighted 20 of these farmers and their personal conservation success stories.

Many more would help, but 40 percent of farmers have been turned away by the U.S. Department of Agriculture when they offer to share the cost of a cleaner environment.

Why? Inadequate funding from Congress.

Find out what’s at stake as Congress decides in the coming weeks whether to cut funding for conservation in the farm bill.

Table Scraps:

Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), Ron Kind (D-Wis.) and Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) sent a letter to the GAO, asking for a review of the crop insurance program in light of EWG’s analysis of the billionaires who have received traditional farm subsidies.

The Associated Press reports on states’ rights to regulate animal welfare conditions and the different language in the House and Senate versions of the farm bill.
