Farm Bill Expires As Shutdown Looms

EWG’s Mike Lavender writes on the programs that will be impacted when the farm bill expires at midnight tonight, and what a good extension would include.

Lavender writes:

The farm programs that polls show ordinary Americans care most about – those that promote local, organic, and environmentally sustainable food – will grind to a halt, while unlimited farm subsidies continue to flow to the largest and most successful farm businesses…

A new extension must also provide funding for critical conservation and nutrition programs that support local and organic farmers and reward good stewardship of our natural resources. Ending direct payments – and extending programs that support local and organic farmers and the environment – would produce significant savings.
