Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve CO 2000 84,670

NOTE:The acreage listed as protected under President Clinton includes at least some acres that were protected under previous administrations. For example, according to the National Park Service's Land Status Listing, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, designated for approximately 30,200 acres in 1999, encompasses 20,766 acres previously protected under the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument, designated in 1933. Acreage listed as protected under President Bush may also include land previously protected.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, designated under Clinton in 2000, is still called the Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Preserve. It will become a National Park when the National Park Service can acquire additional land (Poppen 2004, Heilprin 2002).

National Parks Expanded by President Bush

National Park State Year Acres
Expansion of Grand Teton National Park WY 2001 1,132
Expansion of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park CO 2003 26

NOTE: President Bush did not designate any National Parks in the 12 Western states included in this investigation. However, he did sign legislation in 2003 that authorized the National Park Service to acquire 2,530 acres for Colorado's Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (Public Laws 2003). According to the Park Service's Land Status Listing, the Park Service has acquired an interest in 26.5 of those acres. In 2001, the Bush administration also accepted a gift of 1,106 acres from the Rockefeller family to be added to Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park (Bohrer 2001).
