Children are exposed to an average of 61 different chemical ingredients every day that might be dangerous according to a new Environmental Working Group report.
It says many ingredients are linked to a variety of health problems including allergies, even cancer.
Toothpaste, soap, shampoo and conditioner are popular products for babies and children that most parents use on them every day. But the advocacy group says many contain ingredients that have not been tested for safety.
"You see that label that says for children, safe for kids, gentle, hypoallergenic, you assume that it's been tested for safety. But there is no requirement in federal law that products be safety tested before they're sold" said Jane Houlihan, the Vice President for research at The Environmental Safety Group.
The group is releasing a new children's product safety guide to help parents know which products are safest and the worst.
"For Johnson's baby shampoo for instance, this is a product that contains artificial dyes. It contains chemicals that can have carcinogenic impurities," said Jane.
And she says Huggies Natural Care Disposable Wash cloths are infused with preservatives and chemicals.
"This is a product you can, you can avoid as a parent. You could easily use a normal wash cloth, plain bar of soap and expose your child to far fewer chemicals," said Jane.
Most doctors agree it's best to avoid products that contain fragrances and artificial dyes. And it's already been established that baby powder can be dangerous and should be avoided. They also say children under two should not use toothpaste with fluoride.
Johnson & Johnson stands by the safety of it's products.
