Fluoride in Your Water:
Friend or Foe?

After last month's tap water article, many of you wrote in with a pertinent question: What about fluoride?

Last year, we told you about a Harvard study that linked fluoridation to bone cancer in boys. Even the American Dental Association has changed its tune and now warns against fluoridated water in infant formula.

Our position? It's troubling that children across the country are drinking fluoridated water in spite of serious health concerns. Public water supplies should be safe for everyone.

Curious about how to remove fluoride? Check out this week's Ask EWG question for the answer. Remember, fluoride in toothpaste is good for your teeth, so keep on brushing!

How Mining Could Ruin Your Vacation Plans Or, the Destruction of National Parks

There's a new reason to be concerned about mining. Thousands of mining claims are pushing up against the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Arches, Canyonlands, and Yosemite National Parks. Without government protections, your family's most treasured places could be destroyed.

And mining claims are on the rise -- in 4 years, they've increased more than 80%. The U.S.'s outdated mining law, written in 1872, leaves these prized lands vulnerable. EWG's Dusty Horwitt (left) testified in a House hearing on mining. We'll keep you updated on the progress.

Ask EWG:

What can I do about fluoride in my water?

You recently recommended using carbon filtration for water, but you didn't mention that carbon filters don't remove fluoride from the water. Was this an oversight?

Is my wood deck safe?

My husband and I are thinking of buying this great old house with a big back deck, but I remember reading something about how wood used on decks can be dangerous. We've got a two year old. Should I be worried?

Update: What's in Baby's Bottle

The National Institutes of Health BPA panel has been plagued by corruption in their decisions about the safety of BPA, a hormone-disrupting plastics ingredient in canned foods and infant formula. The panel ignored scientific research and relied on an industry-influenced report, but EWG will continue to fight for safety standards.
