CHEMICALS IN COSMETICS

Reported and Web Produced by: John Matarese
Updated: 01/25/07 16:51:40

Almost all women use cosmetics.

And if you include hair gel and deodorant, most guys use cosmetics too.

Tonight, a report raises questions about the chemicals in them.

Our partner, Consumer Reports Magazine, has concerns about what makes up your makeup.

Specially, they worry about a type of chemical known as "phthalates," which add the pleasant odor to beauty products.

Phthalates have been linked to cancer in animals, among other issues.

"Phthalates" are found in the fragrances in perfume, deodorant, hair gel, body lotion.

Consumer Reports suggests using perfume only every other day....and looking for body lotions that are "fragrance free."

Meantime, the cosmetics industry says concerns are overblown, and insists their products are safe.
