Dangers of looking good
Published January 12, 2007
Ever wonder what those unpronounceable ingredients are on your bottle of nail polish or container of hairspray?
Consumer Reports' shopping magazine, ShopSmart, takes a look at the issue of chemicals in cosmetics in its Winter 2007 edition.
Among its findings: phthalates, which some scientists have implicated in developmental and reproductive health risks, can be found in everyday cosmetics and personal-care products, even though they aren't always listed on product labels.
Another place for information is a searchable database of 14,841 cosmetic products on the Environmental Working Group's Web site - www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep2/.
