Farmers Behind Your Food: Foy Ranch, Wyoming

The 7,138-acre Foy Ranch in Platte County, Wyo., is a three-generation operation. Rocky and Nancy Foy run it with their children, Josh, Emily and Paul, and Rocky’s parents, Leo and Ann.

The family has implemented a number of conservation measures, including developing a grazing plan for their cattle that maximizes carbon storage in the soil, reduces carbon dioxide emissions and provides another source of revenue through the Carbon Credit Exchange Program. They also played an integral role in the formation of the Glendo Wind Energy Association, which uses the area’s wind to generate clean power.

Committed improving grassland and water quality on their ranch through innovative means, the Foys have also developed water resources to increase hay production and used no-till methods and inter-seeding to reduce runoff and enhance vegetation.

The Foy family was recognized by the Sand County Foundation as the 2009 Leopold Conservation Award winners in Wyoming.
