Policy Plate: Balancing Acts Protects Food, Farms and Family
Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) today introduced conservation legislation that recognizes our food, farms and families are all worth protecting. The Balancing Food, Farm and Environment Act would fully fund and reform USDA conservation programs. In particular, H.R. 1890:
· Reforms EQIP to reduce the use of antibiotics and pesticides
· Reforms CRP to provide long-term protection of wetlands, prairie and other habitat
· Requires farmers who receive crop insurance subsidies to adopt basic environmental protections
· Encourages greater farmer-to-farmer collaboration
