Legislation Would Require Clear Labeling of GE Food

Washington, D.C. -- Environmental Working Group applauds Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) for introducing the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act, bipartisan legislation that would require food manufacturers to clearly label genetically engineered (GE) foods.  

“EWG would like to thank Sen. Boxer and Rep. DeFazio for taking up this fight in Congress to give consumers what they have been asking for: more information about what’s in their food,” said EWG’s Vice President of Government Affairs Scott Faber. “EWG has been fighting on behalf of consumers for decades – we know that consumers want more information, not less, about the food they eat.”

More than 90 percent of Americans support GE labeling and 1.2 million people have petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to require GE labeling on packaged foods.

Sixty-four countries already have the right to know whether there are GE ingredients in their food.
