Teflon Coming Under Fire

Published April 1, 2003

DuPont is refuting allegations that a processing aid used in its Teflon products is harmful to young girls and women of childbearing age.

The claims that a compound known as PFOA is a health risk come from the Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Working Group.

The group cites a document from the Environmental Protection Agency as evidence for its claims, but DuPont officials say the draft document has not undergone a full EPA review.

The company also says that although the compound is used to make Teflon products, it is removed during the manufacturing process.
