The rub on sunscreens...

Published July 19, 2008

Q.I heard of a report that sunscreens aren't as good as the manufacturers say they are. I can't remember much about it, but I'd like the information as I've just learned I've got skin cancer. -- J. P., Hollywood A.You may be thinking of a report released recently by the Environmental Working Group, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit research group. It examined 952 sunscreens and found that four out of five don't do the job they claim. In fact, leading brands were among the worst offenders. According to EWG, many sunscreens have a lower sun protection factor (SFP) than claimed on the label, while others contain chemicals that may damage your health. A list of the good, the bad and the so-so can be found at www.ewg.org.
