Quick Bites;

Avoid pesticides End childhood hunger

Published September 26, 2006

The Environmental Working Group has compiled a list of the 12 best and worst fruits and vegetables in terms of pesticide contamination. The 12 foods highest in pesticides are apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, imported grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach and strawberries. The group suggests buying those foods only if they are organically grown. The lowest are asparagus, avocados, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet corn, kiwis, mangos, onions, papayas, pineapples and sweet peas. Haydn Zug's Restaurant, East Petersburg, will offer a fixed-price menu Monday, through Friday, Aug. 21 to 25, and will donate 20 percent of the proceeds to Share Our Strength, which raises money to fight childhood hunger in America. For more information, call Kate Meira, general manager of Haydn Zug's, 569-5746. From staff and wire reports
