Monterey Herald: Nitrate pollution beginning to affect Salinas Valley water quality
Published March 14, 2012
Nitrate contamination of groundwater — primarily caused by agricultural fertilizers — poses a risk to one in 10 people living in the farm-rich Salinas and San Joaquin valleys, UC Davis researchers said Tuesday.
Their report, "Addressing Nitrate in California's Drinking Water," focuses on a contamination problem that isn't new, but one that stands to get worse in the years to come.
"This is a safe drinking water issue," said Thomas Harter, a hydrologist and lead author of the 20-month study.
In a telephone news conference, Harter said groundwater nitrate contamination has been the subject of studies for at least 40 years, but the new study represents a major effort to independently examine the problem in the broadest way.
