Groups launch campaign to protect kids from toxic chemicals

Published October 20, 2003

PORTLAND (AP) -- Ten public health and environmental organizations from Maine have joined more than 200 groups nationwide in launching a new campaign to protect children's health from toxic chemical exposure.

The campaign, called Be Safe, is calling for the state to ban toxic chemicals that a recent study determined were found in human breast milk.

The Environmental Working Group found that chemicals used in flame retardants were found in all 20 women it tested.

The alliance is also calling on the governor and lawmakers to pass legislation to require electronic manufacturers to end their use of toxic chemicals and to finance the collection and safe recycling of consumer electronics.
