Group urges more state groundwater testing for contamination
Published March 11, 2005
ST. PAUL - A national environmental group is urging the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to increase groundwater testing statewide to determine if water has been contaminated by two chemicals made by Three-M Company.
The state Health Department already is testing wells near Cottage Grove for contamination by two chemicals made at Three-M's Chemolite plant in Cottage Grove.
The Environmental Working Group in Washington, D-C, wants more widespread testing.
The head of the Pollution Control Agency's program on emerging contaminants also has requested more testing, and says the agency rejected several proposals she made on how to study the chemicals. An agency spokesman says the M-P-C-A is considering further research.
Three-M is cooperating with the Health Department testing and maintains that the chemicals pose no threat to the environment or human health.
