Firm, U.S. in talks to replace flame retardant chemicals

The manufacturer of flame retardants that have shown up in human blood and breast milk--raising concerns about their possible impact on the developing brains of infants--is negotiating with federal officials to phase out the chemicals. Great Lakes Chemical Corp., based in West Lafayette, Ind., has entered talks with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to curb the use of the substances while seeking a safer substitute, according to company and government officials.
