Farmed or wild salmon?

Categories

Published January 18, 2005

Regarding John Pisto's column (Jan. 5) supporting the buying and eating of farmed salmon: Why would a longtime resident of this historic commercial fishing town do such a thing to his hardworking neighbors?

Commercial salmon fishermen try to make ends meet while doing a backbreaking job in a dying industry. They have to go up against government and environmentalists. When aquaculture came to the foreground a few years ago, it added even more hardship.

Now, a local, famous chef writes a column supporting it. I wonder how many people will take the advice of Pisto to save a buck and eat something that is both harmful to their bodies and the local fishing industry.

I urge anyone interested in the truth about farmed versus wild fish to visit the Environmental Working Group's Web site, www.ewg.org.

How ironic that health-conscious people order salmon in restaurants because it's "good" for them.

From a business standpoint, a restaurateur may find it is more cost effective to go with the cheaper product. But from a consumer standpoint, I'm just wondering.
