EPA to make independent inquiry of PFOA in environment

Published June 24, 2004

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said Friday it has told chemical companies that produce perfluoroctanoic acid (PFOA) that it plans to independently test the chemical's prevalence in the environment.

PFOA, an ingredient in DuPont's Teflon fluoropolymers and other resins, has faced scrutiny from the EPA and public interest groups that are concerned the chemical accumulates in the environment and possibly impacts human health.
