DuPont's Latest Battle

Published May 18, 2005

Chemical giant DuPont has received a federal grand jury subpoena for documents related to a chemical used to make Teflon. The subpoena was served Wednesday out of the U.S. District Court in Washington, DC. It calls on the Delaware-based company to provide a variety of information. That includes documents DuPont previously gave to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which is investigating the potential health risks of the chemical, which is known as C-8. Officials with DuPont say they will be fully responsive to the Department of Justice. Last year, the EPA accused DuPont of repeatedly failing to report information over a 20-year period about the chemical's risks to human health or the environment. DuPont recently announced that it had set aside $15 million in the first quarter to settle the allegations, but a final agreement has not been reached. In February, DuPont agreed to pay 107 million dollars to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by residents who claimed C-8 contaminated water supplies near the company's plant outside of Parkersburg.
