DEAR DESI

Q. Is it safe to cook with Teflon-coated pots and pans? I have heard it is bad for you.

DELAND READER

According to studies made by independent organizations, Teflon heated to high temperatures can be harmful, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration long ago approved Teflon coatings for cooking pots and pans. Fumes given off by Teflon coated utensils are harmful and lethal to birds, a fact that DuPont, which invented it, acknowledges in warnings to consumers. "A simple rule of thumb is: Never keep your pet bird in the kitchen," states DuPont in a warning you can read at www.dupont.com/teflon/newsroom/bird.html
