Could Teflon Be Harming Your Health?

Published January 10, 2006

It is in everything from pans to pizza boxes, carpet and clothes, but could Teflon be harming your health. There is new information on Teflon and its possible affects on your family. The substance in question contains PFOA. Chemical maker DuPont manufactures it. Now government agencies are keeping a close eye on PFOA to find out if does cause cancer and birth defects in humans. Random blood samples reveal 95 percent of Americans may have trace amounts of PFOA in their bloodstreams. The environmental working group, an advocacy organization, says DuPont hid internal documents that showed the exposure risk is several times higher than what they reported to the government. But whether these levels actually cause disease is still being hotly debated. Environmental advocates say chemicals like PFOA should be tested much more thoroughly before they're released to the public. Both the FDA and the EPA are working on studies to determine whether PFOA should be a regulated toxin.
