Chemicals: new study finds fire retardants in farmed salmon

Six months after warning that farm-raised salmon contain higher levels of PCBs than those caught in the wild, an Indiana University team of scientists released new findings this week that farm-raised fish also contain elevated amounts of the flame-retardant chemicals known as PBDEs... An Environmental Working Group study released in September 2003 found breast milk taken from women across the United States contained higher levels of PBDEs than that of women in Europe, where the chemicals are banned. The European Union has banned two of the three most common types of PBDEs, and a similar measure is set to go into effect in California in 2008 (Greenwire, June 4)...
