Chemicals: Democratic Lawmakers ask for EPA Info on PBDEs

Five Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to the U.S. EPA this week asking the agency to report on its efforts to understand the potential human health threats associated with a group of chemicals commonly used in household products.

At issue are polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) -- some of the most widely used flame retardants in commercial products today. Companies use PBDEs in the manufacture of a wide variety of goods, including computer casings and printers, carpets, cell phones and coffee makers, as well as in polyurethane foam used in furniture, mattresses, carpet padding and auto seats.
