• Natural Resources

Environmental Working Group seeks an intern to help protect Western public lands including National Parks, Monuments and other areas. Western public lands are currently threatened by significant increases in metal mining and natural gas drilling activity. Last year, our intern helped author two reports on oil and natural gas drilling that led to coverage in the New York Times and testimony before the New York City Council. He also attended a Congressional hearing about protecting the Grand Canyon from uranium mining and coauthored an op-ed about energy policy. We anticipate another busy and rewarding summer this year.

EWG's intern will assist the following projects for 2009 (to date we have planned):

  1. Drilling's impact on sportsmen: EWG will make the case for oil and gas reform by highlighting the wells drilled on areas treasured by hunters and anglers. Sportsmen have become increasingly concerned about the negative impacts from the explosion of natural gas drilling in the Rocky Mountain West as road networks, heavy machinery and toxic chemicals turn once pristine lands into industrial zones. EWG will analyze the wells drilled in hunting and fishing areas using industry and government records and by telling the stories of hunters and anglers whose lives have been affected.
  2. Drilling's toxic secret: The natural gas industry uses dozens of toxic chemicals yet is exempt from a federal law that would require disclosure of these substances. The industry is also exempt from other federal laws including the Safe Drinking Water Act that sets standards for the underground injection of toxic materials. Industry experts estimate that 90 percent of oil and gas wells are drilled using hydraulic fracturing, a process in which companies inject large quantities of water laced with toxic chemicals underground. EWG will use industry and government records to determine which chemicals the industry is using, where they are being used and what health effects they might have. As natural gas companies move into eastern states including New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania, this issue will likely become even more prominent.
  3. Mining and oil and gas expertise: EWG has become a leading source of information about metal mining and oil and gas drilling. We routinely receive inquiries from reporters and other conservation organizations requesting data that must often be compiled on deadline. Interns will help respond to these requests whether they concern protecting the Grand Canyon from uranium mining or the threat of toxic pollution from natural gas drilling.

Project description:

  • Drafting letters-to-the-editor and op-ed pieces, research on mining and oil and gas drilling
  • Drafting of content for EWG's website
  • Responding to requests from other public lands organizations and legislative offices.
  • Intern may also have the opportunity to attend meetings with Congressional staff and hearings.

Skills Required:

  • Candidates should have excellent writing and research skills
  • An interest in environmental and energy issues is a preferred
