Environmental Analyst and Advocate: Upper Mississippi River Project
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), an environmental research and advocacy organization with offices in Washington, DC; Ames, IA; and Oakland, CA, seeks an Environmental Analyst and Advocate to support our Upper Mississippi River Project. The Environmental Analyst and Advocate will help implement an integrated approach that combines research, communications, and advocacy to reduce the amount of sediments and nutrients delivered to the Mississippi River and its tributaries from agricultural operations and landscapes. The geographic focus of this project is the Upper Mississippi River Basin with a particular focus on Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. The policy focus of this project is to influence the development and implementation of federal and state policy and programs that directly or indirectly affect land use and management in agricultural watersheds in the Upper Mississippi River Basin.
Major Responsibilities
- Devise and conduct research leading to newsworthy and policy relevant reports that shape the conversation regarding development and implementation of state and federal policy and programs that directly or indirectly influence agricultural land use and management in the Upper Mississippi River Basin.
- Establish and maintain relationships with nongovernmental organizations, interest groups, and legislative and executive branch staff in Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois to identify and take advantage of opportunities for EWG to influence legislative and administrative action in those states.
- Advocate and organize support for legislation and administrative initiatives that advance EWG’s objectives in Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois and during reauthorization of the U.S. farm bill in 2012.
- Represent EWG in coalitions and collaborations with other organizations and interests pursuing objectives that complement EWG’s objectives.
Qualifications
- A strong commitment to advocacy to improve the environment, conserve natural resources, and protect human health is essential.
- Experience influencing the development and implementation of legislative and administrative policy is essential.
- Substantial familiarity with U.S. agricultural practice and its effects on soil, water, and related natural resources is essential¾a B.S. or advanced degree in the agricultural, natural or social sciences related to managing natural resources and environmental implications of agricultural production a plus.
- Experience working with and ongoing relationships with nongovernmental organizations, interest groups, and legislative and executive branch staff in Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois a major plus.
- Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with EWG research, communications, and government affairs staff in a fast-paced organization with a prominent profile in agricultural and environmental policy.
- Excellent communications skills, including experience with print, broadcast, and new media, and strong written and interpersonal skills.
Location
The position is located in EWG’s Ames, Iowa office.

Legislative and Policy Analyst: Agriculture and Environmental Policy
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), an environmental research and advocacy organization with offices in Washington, DC, Ames, IA, and Oakland CA, seeks a Legislative and Policy Analyst to support our efforts to reform U.S. agricultural and environmental policy. The Legislative and Policy Analyst will help implement an integrated approach that combines research, communications, and government affairs with a primary focus on implementation of the U.S. 2008 farm bill and advocacy for reform when the farm bill is reauthorized in 2012. The primary objectives are to: (1) reform crop and insurance subsidies to mitigate their effect on the environment and developing countries, (2) increase funding for and the effectiveness of USDA conservation programs, and (3) ensure energy provisions encourage truly sustainable biofuels and biomass energy alternatives.
Major Responsibilities

Online Marketing Internship
EWG's Online Marketing Intern will work in a fast-paced environment, assisting the Web team to release the top-notch, cutting edge research projects for which EWG is recognized. They will provide research and online support on several projects including, among others, our ongoing Bottled Water project, our Kid-Safe Chemicals Policy Blog, our burgeoning Climate Change program, our first-of-its-kind Cosmetics Database.
The Online Marketing Intern will both see how a project develops from an idea to being launched on the Internet and, in some cases, policy reform and get first-hand experience of the inner workings of a successful not-for-profit organization.
Project Description:
- Implement online marketing based on SEO (search engine optimization) audit
- Conduct keyword research and research competitors to increase inbound/outbound links
- Find & Fix SEO “missing pieces” (meta tags, node URLs and duplicate pages)
- Conduct research of potential link building options in social media
- Research and promote EWG via social media
- Assist with implementation of new press release software
- Provide keyword suggestions for press releases
Skills Required:
- Preferred: Current Undergraduate students with an interest in science or public health fields.
- Must be detail oriented.
- Sense of initiative and diligence to independently pursue and complete research tasks.
- Ability to pace work toward deadlines.

Online Video Internship
Located at Environmental Working Group's offices in DC, you will help EWG web staff create (direct, film and edit) video content suitable for online use (the more viral the better). This will include short videos with staff actors and videos with only images and text. Check out our You Tube channel here: http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvironmentalWG. We also want help improving our You Tube page/increasing its traffic.
Skills Required:
- Preferred: Current Undergraduate students with a background in film production.
- Sense of initiative and diligence to independently pursue and complete films
- Knowledge of optimizing films for YouTube would be a plus, but not required.

General Research
EWG's General Research Intern will work in a fast-paced environment, assisting the Research team to release the top-notch, cutting edge research projects for which EWG is recognized. They will provide research support on several projects including, among others, our ongoing Bottled Water project, our burgeoning Climate Change program, our first-of-its-kind Cosmetics Database.
The Research Intern will both see how a project develops from an idea to, in some cases, policy reform and get first-hand experience of the inner workings of a successful not-for-profit organization.
Project Description:
- Perform literature reviews of scientific studies- synthesizing and summarizing findings;
- Conduct research (online, phone) as necessary to find information on laboratories, companies, products, etc.;
- Editing research documents
- Work on databases.
Skills Required:
- Preferred: Current Undergraduate students with an interest in science or public health fields.
- Must be detail oriented.
- Sense of initiative and diligence to independently pursue and complete research tasks.

Government Affairs
EWG seeks a Government Affairs intern to help shape policy that will protect public health and the environment on a broad range of issues.
Issues include:
- Toxics. Reforming chemical policy to ensure that chemicals are safe for children before they enter the market by strengthening the Toxic Substances Control Act, removing jet fuel from drinking water and hazardous chemicals from consumer products, and promoting safer alternatives.
- Farm Bill. Passing a fair and equitable Farm Bill that achieves greater equity in the distribution of taxpayer benefits, significantly increases conservation funding to address unintended environmental impacts of agricultural production, and meaningfully addresses concerns about renewable energy, organic agriculture, crop insurance and disaster payments, and nutrition.
- Natural Resources. Protecting Western public lands, including National Parks, Monuments and other areas that are currently threatened by significant increases in metal mining and natural gas drilling activity.
- Energy Policy and Global Warming. Promoting renewable energy polices that ensure that we address our energy and global warming issues wisely. Areas that EWG has been active in include biofuels and nuclear power.
Description:

Natural Resources open-ended applications
Environmental Working Group seeks an intern to help protect Western public lands from reckless oil and gas drilling and to promote agriculture and biofuels policies that safeguard water, soil and wildlife. Last year, our interns helped author a report on toxic oil and gas drilling chemicals that received coverage on National Public Radio among other outlets, wrote an op-ed piece that was published in two newspapers in upstate New York, attended Congressional hearings and drafted memos for Congressional staff. We anticipate another busy and rewarding internship this year.
EWG's intern will assist on several projects including a continued investigation of hydraulic fracturing, a natural gas and oil drilling technique that injects wells with up to eight million gallons of water, unknown toxic chemicals and sand in order to increase production. The intern will also contribute to our work on biofuels and farm policy that focuses in part on shifting away from corn ethanol and toward more sensible energy solutions.
Project description:
- Performing researching and writing content for EWG's reports
- Reaching out to legislative offices, media and citizens organizations.
- Drafting letters-to-the-editor and op-ed pieces.
