About the Healthy Living: Home Guide

The Environmental Working Group’s mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. We are a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment.

To us, “environment” includes not just the beautiful outdoor spaces you visit—it’s more personal. We believe the environment also includes the building you call home and the bodies you nurture every day. We spend at least half of our lives in our homes, counting sleeping, eating and caregiving routines. Indoor air pollution can be two to five times greater than outdoor air pollution, and the greatest contributors are sneaky chemicals that come into our homes uninvited through furniture, dust, and home treatments like paint, sprays and repellants. We come into contact with these unwanted guests every day. We created the Healthy Living: Home Guide to arm you with information about potential chemical exposures in your home, and provide purchasing recommendations so that you can make the best choices for yourself and your family.

About the Environmental Working Group

We drive consumer choice and civic action with breakthrough research and education.

Do you know what hazardous contaminants and chemicals you’re exposed to daily? In your home? In your tap water? What about your shampoo? What’s lurking in the cleaners underneath your sink? What pesticides are on your food? How about the farms, fracking wells and factories in your area? Do you know what safeguards these industries use to protect your water, soil, air and your kids? Which large agribusinesses are supported by your tax dollars and why?

More than two decades ago EWG set out to answer these questions, and more, and to empower you to get to know your environment and protect your health.

EWG’s groundbreaking research has changed the debate over environmental health. From households to Capitol Hill, EWG’s team of scientists, policy experts, lawyers, communication experts and programmers has worked tirelessly to stand up for public health when government and industry won’t.

Through our reports, online databases, mobile apps and communications campaigns, EWG is educating and empowering consumers to make safer and more informed decisions about the products they buy and the companies they support. In response to consumer pressure, companies are giving up potentially dangerous chemical ingredients in their products and improving their practices.
