Leading the way toward safer chemicals 

Long a bellwether state, California has a huge consumer market that affects manufacturing practices in the rest of the U.S. If a toxic chemical is banned from products sold in California, manufacturers will likely stop using it.  

EWG leads campaigns to ban or regulate harmful pesticides, toxic chemicals in cosmetics, personal care products and other consumer products and household goods.

California First State To Ban 24 Toxic Chemicals in Personal Care Products and Cosmetics

On September 30, California made beauty industry history by enacting the Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act, Assembly Bill 2762.

This is the first ban in the country of 24 toxic ingredients, including mercury and formaldehyde, from beauty and personal care products.
