Coming soon: EWG's Skin Deep mobile app

Friday, February 22, 2013

You asked for it, and we’re building it:  a mobile shopping app for EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.

To guide us to what our many Skin Deep fans want and need, last week the Environmental Working Group hosted its first-ever consumer focus group, where we sought the ideas of 30 veteran Skin Deep users.   We wanted to know how these EWG ambassadors would want to use our app and how they found out about their current favorite apps.

We broke in to small groups and reviewed printed screenshots of the rough draft of the Skin Deep app now being designed. Participants used the paper version to role-play the steps they might follow when they were in a store, researching a product.  We wrote their critiques, insights and recommendations onto post-it notes and organized them on our conference room wall. Finally, we broke into discussion groups to drill deeper into issues such as social media sharing, target audience, fixing bugs and the in-store experience.

They came up with valuable advice about the ideal user experiences and very clear direction for the first version of the app. Thanks to their feedback we are on our way to releasing the first version of the app this summer!

Thank you to our amazing EWG ambassadors! And thank you Allen Gunn from Aspiration for co-facilitating the discussion.

Check back on Enviroblog for updates on our progress as we get closer to the release date. We plan to ask EWG fans to test the pre-release version of the app.

We would love to hear from you, our readers.  What mobile apps do you use as you shop? Are there ways you use your phone to help you chose an item in the store?  Do you have any "must-have" mobile apps for the grocery or drugstore?  We would love to learn what you already find useful!
