benzene

In the chemical families: Substituted benzenes, Volatile and semivolatile organic compounds (VOCs and SVOCs)

Chronic exposure to benzene is known to cause leukemia and other blood diseases. People are primarily exposed through breathing urban air, automobile exhaust, and cigarette smoke, but benzene is also found in tap water and in some soft drinks. EWG research exposed buried Food and Drug Administration tests showing that the agency ignored the problem of benzene in soft drinks for 15 years and resulted in changed formulations.

Health Effects related to benzene: Cancer, Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive)

Routes of Exposure related to benzene:

  • Air: indoor air, industrial air pollution, outdoor air
  • Environment: agriculture, industrial water pollution
  • Food: soft drinks
  • Water: sewage sludge, tap water
